Taking Shape—The Application of Chasing and Repousse’ for Jewelers

This workshop will introduce students to a basic foundation in skill development within the technique of chasing and repousse’. Use the technique of classical chasing to outline various ornamental and contemporary designs, raise metal from the back of the piece with punches to add depth and dimension, and then learn to chase the front of the design to add details and a dramatic effect.

By the end of class students will have 2-3 samples of work to gain knowledge of tool usage, and 1-2 final projects of their own design aesthetic based on the techniques learned to incorporate into a finished jewelry piece(s).

Student Prerequisites: Torch experience. No prior chasing or repousse’ experience is necessary.

In this 2-day, hands-on workshop, Christina will demonstrate how to employ multiple making methods in a single body of work to benefit both body and mind, and to create more interesting pots. Students will use wheelthrowing, handbuilding with handmade hump and slump molds, and Christina’s signature pinch and carve technique to create a wide variety of pot forms.

Christina will also show how to unify these disparate making methods into a cohesive body of work with finishing details and surface decoration, demonstrating how she creates her botanical and bird patterns with slips and wax resist.
