Camp Sawtooth Week 2: July 12-16 PM Half Day (ages 9-12) Wood: Unplugged

Wood: Unplugged- Intro to Traditional Woodworking-
Students will begin the first day by learning the fundamentals of wood as a building material and an artistic medium. This introduction includes lessons on the basics of tree anatomy as well as the mechanical structure of wood and its mechanical properties. After gaining a basic understanding of wood as a material, the students will be introduced to a variety of traditional hand tools and their functions.

The second day will kick off a fun project where the students use some of the basic, traditional hand tools to create a small bench that can be used for reading books or as a step to reach the counter. This bench is very simple, but teaches some of the skills necessary to perform basic processes such as planing, chiseling, sawing, measuring, and marking.

On the third, fourth, and fifth days, the students will build a small keepsake box that will build off of their skills learned from the bench project. This project introduces more advanced skills such as using a plow plane to "plow" a groove, raising a panel, fitting dovetails, and application of a protective finish. At the end of the last day the students will have a keepsake box to store their favorite rocks, coins, cards, or other collections!
