As a lover of all things creative, Jacinta V. White merges her perspective as an artist, professional, and community advocate for change. Jacinta is sought out to work with others on better understanding the role and value of arts in our lives for healing and to build community. Jacinta's latest collection of poems, Resurrecting the Bones: Born from a Journey through African American Churches & Cemeteries of the Rural South (Press 53), was published Sept. 2019. Jacinta has her BA in Speech Communications from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. And after receiving her MPA in Nonprofit Management from Georgia State University, she decided to redirect her love for art and community by starting The Word Project, a company through which she offers writing and creative workshops to help individuals and groups process tough issues.

We are excited to welcome The North Carolina Black Repertory Company (NC Black Rep) the first professional Black theatre company in the State of North Carolina as we celebrate Coconut Cake coming this Summer during the 2024 Black Theatre Festival. Written by Melda Beaty, Directed by Nathan Ross Freeman, Coconut Cake is a 2022 Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin Rolling World Premiere Award Winner! It tells the story of four retirees who spend their days debating the mysteries of life over coffee and games of chess at a local McDonald’s. But when a mysterious woman moves to town, tempting Eddie Lee and his chess buddies to indulge in melt-in-your-mouth coconut cakes and medicine cabinet secrets, their lives are changed forever.
Collaborating with our special guest is Sauda Mitchell. Sauda serves as the Director of Graphics and Printmaking at Sawtooth where she develops high quality curricula and programming for students of all skill levels, ages and backgrounds. Sauda's work focuses on utilizing printmaking and QR code technology as a creative non-traditional access method linking viewers to archival repositories, curated exhibitions, and aggregated data. Each work serves as a visual response to archival collection materials representative of the many stories that can be found deep within the archival landscape. Sauda's work is held in both private and university special collections and museums around the U.S.
