Winter Catalog Online

Start your year off right!

We can’t wait to ring in the new year with new innovative art classes, exhibitions, and events. Here’s a taste of Winter 2020!

+ Visiting Artists: We are excited to bring four new visiting artists to Sawtooth in 2020!

Katie Baldwin will join Sawtooth in February for a Mokuhanga: Japanese Woodblock Printing Workshop. Katie is a printmaker and book artist who has traveled internationally as an artist in residence, including at Nagasawa Residency in Japan. She has exhibited extensively, including at Geida University in Tokyo and the Print Center in Philadelphia. She is currently an associate professor of art at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Laurie Schorr, director of education at the Light Factory in Charlotte, will join our Photography Studio for a Holga and Lomography Workshop in February She has been teaching for more than 10 years within public schools and community centers. She received her master’s degree in art and art education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Laurie will share the creative freedom in making images with low-tech plastic cameras (with plastic lenses!) to create dreamy, nostalgic imagery.

Jason Stockman is a ceramic artist and educator currently based out of Florida. He is currently an assistant professor of ceramics and 3-D program head at State College of Florida in Bradenton, Fla. His demonstration workshop in February will focus on form and surface with an emphasis on color. Using a process of replication will allow the creation of a form that can be explored with a variety of colors. This session will also delve into the use of color and the psychological relation to emotion, identity and more.

Christopher Darway has been working in metals for more than 40 years as a designer, teacher, and artisan. He has sold and exhibited work through the American Craft Council and Smithsonian Craft Shows. His work has been exhibited in Germany, Japan and England. He currently teaches at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and Wayne Art Center in Wayne, Penn. His workshop in June will explore Steam Casting. Low tech in execution but sophisticated in theory, steam casting is a fun way to do lost wax casting without much equipment. Students will carve hard wax for rings and make hot glue gun rings.

+ Girls and Production Returns for 2nd Year

Girls and Production (GAP) returns for its second year at Sawtooth with an 11-week afterschool course during which students will learn filmmaking concepts. GAP’s mission is to equip young women who possess a passion for filmmaking with the awareness, skills, and confidence needed to compete in a male-dominated industry. Students will write, direct and shoot their own three-minute short film using iPhones and minimal equipment. Final films will be edited by the students and screened at a/perture cinema. New students can apply online; returning students are eligible to participate. Scholarships are available.

+ New Teen Offerings

With an increased interest in teen classes, Sawtooth’s winter catalog features 20 classes that are specifically designed for teenage students. These classes include:

+ Winter Exhibitions

Sawtooth will host two exhibitions this winter featuring youth artwork from Winston-Salem Forsyth County School students.

  • Join us in January for “Myself Seeing/Seeing Myself” which features photographic portraits of students from Carter G. Woodson Middle School. The students discovered the power of creating self-portraits in a short photography workshop taught by local artist and teacher Diana Greene. The young women gained the skills to compose and create portraits based on clearly seeing what they see, how they see and understand how to translate their vision using a camera. Experiencing the creative process from wonder to exploration to refinement provided students with an opportunity to dig deeper, penetrating beyond the surface of a snapshot.
  • Come support the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School system’s Spring Arts Extravaganza. Sawtooth and the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts are excited to partner with Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools and Modern Automotive to showcase the extensive selection of art from the students enrolled in the visual arts programs throughout the county.
