Sawtooth’s Director of Ceramics position provides a unique opportunity for ceramics artists to share, explore and develop their own art practice within our community of artists, students, and patrons. The ceramic program at Sawtooth has a 55-year history of providing quality ceramic classes and workshops for the Piedmont Triad and beyond, and supports a community of ceramacists. The average quarterly adult student enrollment is 270 students per quarter. In addition to the adult program, the ceramics facility also accommodates weekly classes and workshops for youth and teens.


All aspects of studio and class management including: class and instructor scheduling and administration, equipment maintenance, kiln firing, along with opportunities to teach. This position provides access to a fully equipped ceramic studio, personal studio space, and an opportunity for solo exhibition. Our thriving ceramic program has a strong visiting artist component, enabling residents to engage with ceramic artists throughout our region and beyond.

The studio directing position would include oversight of the 4500 square-foot ceramic facility, including a handbuilding/sculpture studio, wheelthrowing studio, glaze mixing room, glazing area, electric kiln room, and gas kiln room with spray booth. The studios house 18 electric potters wheels, 2 slab rollers, extruders, pug mill, 3 electric kilns, and two 40-cubic-feet gas kilns.

Eligibility and Criteria

Applications are open to all experienced ceramicists. Sawtooth prefers an emerging or mid-career artist with teaching and administrative experience, who will benefit from working in a thriving program with significant community involvement. Strong preference will be given to applicants with an MFA in ceramic arts. The candidate’s artistic talent, professional experience, and technical skills in studio and equipment maintenance, will be considered in the selection process.

This is a full-time, salaried position and will include teaching classes and workshops. The Director of Ceramics will periodically provide demonstrations and/or participate in class discussions and critiques in the intermediate and advanced classes.
