Introducing Girls & Production in collaboration with a/perture cinema

What Is It And Who Is It For?

Girls and Production (GAP) is an after-school program featuring a semester of seminars geared towards films about and made by women, followed by a semester of learning beginning technical filmmaking skills, and culminating in several short student films. An a/perture cinema and Sawtooth School for the Visual Arts program, this course will provide students from ages 14 to 18 with a nuanced understanding of gendered and female representation in film alongside fundamental filmmaking skills that will equip them to actively participate in the growing movement to bring more female filmmakers into the industry of movie-making!

The G.A.P Seminar Series, Fall Semester

For the seminar-based portion of the program, we’ll be watching segments and clips from films drawn from a variety of cultures, genres, and female voices in film and will be followed by discussions among the group!

Filmmaking 101, Spring Semester

For the filmmaking-based portion of the program, we’ll be teaching the girls foundational and beginning filmmaking skills, including: shot composition and basic directing terms and techniques, lens use and basic cinematography terms and techniques, sound design, lighting, set design, and post production film editing. The girls will each have an iPhone to practice their skills, as well as a variety of lenses and filmmaking equipment to share. They will each make at least one 3-minute short on their own that they will both write and direct, and will spend the last week working in teams to create two, seven-minute short films that will screen at the culmination of the year-long program.
