In the Wood Studio
Sara Stine The Glass Program is designed to offer students of all levels a variety of experiences working with the media of glass in a studio setting.  From hot glass kiln and torch work to stained glass and other cold working methods, you'll find a simple opportunity to experiment with the fascinating medium of glass.  The Metals Program is designed to offer students of all levels an opportunity to expand their knowledge of metalworking. Students with no prior experience are encouraged to take the beginning fabrication courses to build a strong foundation before taking casting. Metals classes are held in the main floor Metals/Wood Studio. The Studio Coordinator is Sara Sloan Stine.  sculpted@sawtooth.org

GLASS CLASSES

532. The Art of Making Glass Beads
Instructor Jeff Wilson
Learn the art of glass beadmaking. Basic beadmaking techniques, the tools and methods used, and safety will be covered. Discuss setting up a safe workspace, proper ventilation for flame work, different gas options, torches, methods for cooling/annealing the beads, and basic tools used. Create beautiful beads using molten glass, stringers, mandrels and a torch. Learn the importance of slow, even rotation of the mandrel, positioning of your hands, working in the flame, shaping the bead and adding extra glass. No experience necessary, and students may repeat the course to gain proficiency. All materials provided. Class limited to 8 students.

530. Glassblowing & Lampworking

Explore the art of lampwork using glass tubes and rods to create small figurative sculpture, fused-glass jewelry, beads, ornaments or bottles. Lectures, demonstrations and hands-on practice will teach the basics of the craft. Included is historic and technical information on the use of glass and its properties. All material provided. Class limited to eight.

5322. Lampworked Glass Pendants

Instructor Jeff Wilson
Create beautiful glass pendants from Italian Moretti glass, known for its stunning range of colors. These free-form pendants are created in a torch's flame, known as lampworking. You'll learn how to use multiple colors in a single pendant, how to create a "bail" from the glass, and lots more. This is a fine first class to take if you've never been behind a lampworker's torch, but will also be much fun for those familiar with glass beadmaking or glassblowing. Materials included in the fee.

5323. Beautiful Glass Beads from Stained Glass

Learn how to use stained glass in flameworking to make glass beads, full of swirls, colors and depth that using stained glass allows. This is a great class for those familiar with traditional glass beadmaking techniques, or for someone wanting to try a very satisfying, creative art. Take home all the beads you create! 5300. Torch Time for Lampworking & Glass Beadmaking

This open torch time allows for experienced students to use the Sawtooth's torch and gas while pursuing projects of their own choosing. There will be no instructor or agenda for the session, but a studio monitor will be on hand to turn on the gas and keep everyone safe. You should bring your own glass, but the tools in the studio will be available for your use. Experience at Sawtooth's lampworking studio required.

5401. Creative Fused Glass Workshop
Instructor Patrick Burger
Learn a fascinating new hobby, and create art you can wear and use! No previous experience is necessary and your teacher, Patrick Burger, has been instructing students of all ages in glass fusion for over 20 years. While creating pins, earrings, pendants, or ornaments, you’ll also learn a lot about glass itself – from its creation to its innumerable uses. Each student will have finished pieces to take home. Basic materials included in the fee. Some special glass and supplies will be discussed in class and may be available to purchase.

5019. Glass Shaping and Slumping Workshop

Explore glass slumping, sagging and draping methods for forming three-dimensional kiln-fired glass. The workshop will include hands-on experimentation with various techniques and discussion of moldmaking processes. Beginners welcome. Fee includes basic supplies.

550. Creating with Stained Glass

Looking for something fun and creative? Join us for this class that teaches traditional stained glass techniques while creating some non-traditional stained glass items. During this class you’ll work with various types/textures of glass, tools for cutting, breaking and grinding glass, patterns for sun catchers, stepping stones, and more. You’ll begin by creating a smaller glass project to gain basic skills then take your glass cutting skills to the next level by creating a sun catcher or other project with copper foil and solder. Continue with a 3-dimensional project and much more. Tools and equipment are available in the studio to share during class.

Explore the beautiful art of stained glass by creating designs in colored glass and copper foil or lead came. Beginners work on glass panels while more advanced students work on projects of their own design. Learn the basics of cutting and grinding glass and the intricacies of effective design and use of color. Supply list available at class. The studio is equipped with tools to share. Students will purchase the supplies that go into their projects.

554. Stained Glass Mosaics

Welcome to the art of mosaic! This class will cover a brief history on this simple yet stunning art-form and provide advice and instruction on various mosaic techniques. Projects will range from a classical trivet to your own exterior house number to a free-form wall plaque. An informative and enjoyable intro to mosaic for beginners and the experienced crafts-person alike. Basic supplies included.

510. Beginning & Intermediate Jewelry Fabrication
Learn the many facets of jewelry-making using sterling silver, copper or brass. Guided projects will introduce you to basic techniques such as sawing, soldering, polishing, simple stone setting, surface texturing and more. Learn while creating earrings, rings, and more to design your own creations. You’ll be amazed how simple sheet metal and wire is transformed into something beautiful! Silver and stones are available for purchase during class.

514. Jewelry Casting - Lost Wax Casting
Instructor Carole Morse
Discover the mystery of molten metal transformed into beautiful jewelry. The traditional techniques of wax carving and sculpting are used to create a model. The wax model is then invested in preparation for lost-wax vacuum casting using silver. Jewelry fabrication experience is helpful but not required, and beginners are welcome. Materials are available for purchase in class.

518. PMC – Precious Metal Clay

PMC is a clay-like material made of silver powder and an organic binder. It’s shaped into whatever form you’d like, adding textures and stones if desired, and then fired in a kiln. Once fired, only the precious metal remains, forming a piece that’s .999 silver. Learn all the basics of PMC while completing some beautiful projects. Techniques include stamping, stone setting, working with PMC sheet and syringe forms, different finishing techniques and more. PMC will be available for purchase in class. Supply list.

5184. PMC & Dichroic Glass Pendant Workshop

Do you love the iridescent sparkle of dichroic glass? Ever wished you could create a unique pendant with a dichroic glass cabochon (cab.)? PMC3 is a wonderful material consisting of pure silver powder made into a workable "clay". This workshop will introduce beginners to the art of metal clay while creating a beautiful glass pendant set in precious metal clay (PMC). No experience necessary. Materials fee of $60 is payable to the instructor the first evening

5101. Bead and Pearl Stringing Workshop

Instructor Kathy Young Albertelli
Learn to string beautiful pearls and other types of beads using a knotting process, complete a beautiful necklace. Through discussion, demonstration and hands-on practice, learn the basics of creating a skillfully crafted piece of beaded jewelry. Experienced students may proceed at their own pace. 5204. Scrap Metal Sculpture - Turn Junk into Art
Instructor Jason Hutcherson
This workshop will cover the basics of creating metal sculpture from scrap metal and found materials. Students will learn about MIG welding and various metal working techniques in order to create their own unique metal sculpture. Students will also learn about setting up their own low budget sculpture studio, the equipment needed and where to find it, and how to find scrap metal. We will meet Friday evening for an introduction and discussion of the equipment, the materials, and proper safety techniques. On Saturday, we will meet for the hands-on training and students will build their own sculptures.

5205. Hand Process Tinsmithing
Instructor Greg David
Until the first decade of the 19th century, virtually all tinware was manufactured by "hand process" both in Europe and America utilizing stakes, hammers, mandrels, and molds. Using readily available tools and materials, students will learn the basic techniques of layout, cutting and soldering to create simple candle holders, scoops or sconces. This weekend workshop is intended as basic instruction for beginners. Materials included.

5201. Oxy-Acetylene Welding for the Artist
Instructor John Martin
Learn how to weld using the oxy-acetylene torch. Take scrap metal, copper, brass and steel, and turn them into sculpture, jewelry and found object art. This one-day workshop will teach you how to operate the oxy-acetylene torch, and use it safely to create metal work that can be used as functional or decorative art. Students will be contacted regarding supplies, etc. Class limited to 6 students.

5203. MIG Welding for the Artist
Instructor John Martin
Try your hand at welding with a 110-volt MIG welder.
For students with or without any experience in welding, come see what MIG welding can offer. MIG welding can be a quicker and cleaner process than traditional stick welding or oxy-acetylene welding. It can also be used on a wide variety of metals and alloys. You will also be able to use a plasma cutter, which offers the possibility of intricate cuts. There will be demonstration and hands-on practice. Bring long-sleeve shirt, wear cotton/denim pants, closed-toe shoes or boots, heavy leather gloves, bring lunch, welding helmets and metal to practice with if you have it.

5206. Weekend Oxy-Acetylene Welding for the Artist

Enjoy this weekend version of our popular Welding for the Artist workshop! Ira will teach you how to weld using the oxy-acetylene torch. 575. Birdcarving - Warbler

This fascinating carving class introduces students to the precise art of carving life-like birds out of wood. Students will learn the use of power carving tools (flexible shaft tools), burning tools, bird anatomy, and other techniques while creating the bird sculpture.
